Expert recommendations on Super Bowl betting

Home team doesn’t matter during the Super bowl, so throw that advantage away. Teams play on a neutral playing field, so we don’t see home field advantage. Looking at the data from the last 10 Super Bowls, we can see a skew on how bets went in the biggest game of the season.

Last 10 Super bowls:

  • The underdog has out-performed the favorite 8 out of 10 time
  • 7 out of 10 games have gone over the predicted score
  • The favorites covered the spread only 3 out of 10 games

So based on the last 10 Super Bowls we would bet for the underdog to win, go against the spread and pick the over. Obviously this is a long shot, but mathematically it makes the most sens

How to get to the Super Bowl?

Many football fans have a dream of getting to watch the Super Bowl. Imagine watching your favorite team win in the biggest game of the year. It’ll be a memory you would never forget. Now getting there is a whole other story. You’re legit competing versus all football fans around the world and it doesn’t even matter who is playing.

The best way of getting to the game is being a season ticket holder of either the AFC or NFC championship team. They each get to fill 17.5 percent of the stadium. This is a draw/lottery between all season ticket holders of those teams. The next best option is being a fan of the host team, as they get to split 6.2 percent of the stadium tickets. One-third (33.6 percent) of the tickets are given evenly to the 29 remaining teams. Therefore about one-quarter (25 percent) of tickets are given to media, staff and remaining bidders.

The two most common ways of getting tickets are winning contests or getting tickets from second hand buyers. Now winning a contest does sound extreme. However, who has the money to be a season ticket holder? This is the cheapest and yes, luckiest way to get to the Super bowl. Now second hand ticket sales are bigger than ever before, especially during the biggest sporting event of the year. This is the easiest but most expensive way to get to the Super Bowl. People have been known to pay thousands of dollars to sit anywhere in the stadium just to get chance to witness history.

How to bet on the Super Bowl in Las Vegas

This is a big question that is asked. Las Vegas is the only State or region in North America that allows single game betting. Which, ultimately decides if you’re going to bet on game or not. The minute you include more than one game (parlay) the odds of your ticket decline substantially. Look at the chart below, which shows how your odds decrease the more games you bet on.

The table is based on bets of $100

Number Odds Amount won Payout
2 Team Parlay 2.6 to 1 $260 $360
3 Team Parlay 6.5 to 1 $650 $750
4 Team Parlay 13 to 1 $1,300 $1,400
5 Team Parlay 25 to 1 $2,500 $2,600
6 Team Parlay 50 to 1 $5,000 $5,100
7 Team Parlay 100 to 1 $10,000 $10,100
8 Team Parlay 180 to 1 $18,000 $18,100
9 Team Parlay 400 to 1 $40,000 $40,100
10 Team Parlay 825 to 1 $82,500 $82,600
11 Team Parlay 1500 to 1 $150,000 $150,100

In person is one way of betting through Vegas. Just like in the movies you go to a Casino and drop a stack of cash. For example 10,000 dollars on the favorite, you then get your ticket and you call it a day. You can do this at a sports booking agency or one of the Casinos: MGM, Bellagio, Mirage etc. They are all willing to take your super bowl bet with no questions asked. The biggest pro, of in person betting is the amount you can bet can be substantially higher than betting online. The only Con of betting in Vegas is that YOU HAVE TO BE IN VEGAS!!!!

Betting online through Vegas sports books or even casino sports book is what is key now a day. You can live anywhere on the planet and can bet from your phone or laptop that has an Internet connection. Which is fabulous for average sports fan. Most online bookies will even explain that you can be out of state resident or even out of country.

Most popular Super Bowl bets?

There are three very popular bets to make during the Super bowl and any NFL/ football game.

  • Moneyline
  • Spread
  • Over/Under

What is a Moneyline bet?

Moneyline betting is the easiest, simplest and the most basic way to bet on a game. You as the better are picking which team will win the game. When betting the moneyline on games all you have to do is figure out the odds and make a bet that suits your needs. An example of this is would be LA Rams at -170 against New England Patriots at +140. The minus specifies that the Rams are the favorites to win and you would have to bet $170 to win $100. However, with the Patriots being the underdog, you would only have to bet $100 to win $140.

What is Point Spread?

The point spread is the most popular way to bet on NFL games. However, more skill and thought has to go into each bet. You are betting on the winning margin of each game rather than the outright winner. Let’s take a match-up of Los Angeles Rams against the New Orleans Saints. In this match-up the Saints are favored to win by 2.3 points over the Rams. The indicates that the Saints must win by at LEAST 3 points, this will be shown at -2.5 on the betting slip. Meanwhile, if you bet on the Rams, you are betting that the Rams will either win the game by any score or not lose by more than 3 points. This would be shown as +2.5 on the betting slip. Many sportsbooks don’t like having spreads that fall onto whole numbers, so that is why the half point is included. This stops “pushes” from happening, in which all bets are returned, because the spreads weren’t reached. The most popular spreads are 7 and 3 point differentials. That means the game was either won on a touchdown, with an extra point or by a field goal. This is something to keep an eye on because games tend to either by one by a difference of one score. Some betters will even buy an extra half-point from the sportsbook to get away from that spread, because the results are so common.

What is an Over/Under bet?

The Over/Under bet is trying to predict how many points will be scored during the game. Let’s say the New England Patriots against the Kansas City Chiefs are given a total of 55. You the better, will have to decide if the two teams will score together will have a score over or fewer than 55. The under betters ticket will hit if the two teams score 54 points or less and the over team better will win if the two teams score 56 or more.

Other Super Bowl bets

  • Coin toss
  • Length of the anthem
  • What color Gatorade
  • Yards in the game
  • Half time show
  • Will the President be there
  • What is the first scoring play

These are considered Prop bets. Proposition bets are made and don’t consider the outcome of the game, just a specific area of the game. During the Super Bowl the sports bookies will take wagers on anything they can think of and give you odds to bet on.

Where can I bet on the Super Bowl?

Many football fans would love to place a wager on the biggest game of the year. However, certain states have now passed legalized, in person sports betting/gambling. If you live in a state that hasn’t yet, don’t worry you still have tons of options. The next best thing is online sports betting. You don’t have to be a resident of that state and you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home. The best thing about these sites is that they aren’t government run so you don’t have to make a parlay bet and can just bet on single games. You will also get better odds from these sites because the states gambling committee will always protect the house and give worse odds.
