Christian Pulisic has just become the most expensive American soccer player after signing with Chelsea earlier this morning. Pulisic will join the English Premier League side Chelsea for $ 73.1 million (£58 million). The transfer fee is more than three times what German Club Wolfsburg paid for American John Brooks ($ 22 million).
Pulisic was immediately loaned back to the Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund for the rest of the season. He has only played in six season games this year for Dortmund, scoring one goal. His lack of playing time has hinted to his eventual transfer. Borussia Dortmund sits atop of the Bundesliga table, six points ahead of German power house, Bayern Munich. Pulisic will be used in Champions League, as Dortmund faces English side, Tottenham Hotspur.
It was reported that he was on the radar of many Premier League teams such as Liverpool and Arsenal. The move to Chelsea is actually quite shocking, as he will be misplaced in the loaded team. Both Arsenal and Liverpool seemed like better choices. The attacking styles of either team would’ve better-suited Pulisic skill set. The move could’ve been done to stop rival teams signing him; he could end up under performing, just like Salah and Lukaku. This is a power move from a top team, throwing money around to prove that they aren’t to be messed with.
